Plant Bulbs in Fall for Spring

October is the month you plant for April. The work is fifteen minutes; the payoff is six weeks of color.

Steps

  1. 01Buy: 20 daffodil bulbs, 10 tulip bulbs, or a mix. Choose firm bulbs, no soft spots.
  2. 02Find a spot — a pot, a window box, a strip of garden — that gets morning sun.
  3. 03Plant pointy-end up, three times the bulb's height deep. A 5cm bulb goes 15cm down.
  4. 04Water once after planting. Then forget them. The cold winter is the fertilizer.
  5. 05First green tips poke through in early March. Flowers in April.
