Visual Zoning When the Apartment Is One Room

Studio, dorm, single-room rental. The trick is making one room read as three places — sleep, work, eat — without walls.

Steps

  1. 01A rug under the bed defines the sleep zone. Even a small one tucked half under.
  2. 02A different small rug or a folded throw under the desk chair defines the work zone.
  3. 03A round table — even a small folding one — defines the eat zone. Round, not square; round breaks the line of all the right angles.
  4. 04Lighting per zone: bedside lamp, desk lamp, one pendant or floor lamp by the table.
  5. 05Avoid one giant overhead light at night. It collapses all three zones into one.
