The One Rug That Decides Everything
Buying a first rug is intimidating because the apartment is empty and you have no reference. One rule: it must be larger than you think.

Steps
- 01Measure the seating area — couch + chairs as a group.
- 02The rug should reach at least the front legs of every piece in that group. Smaller and the room reads cheap.
- 03Color: a muted neutral first rug. Cream, oatmeal, soft taupe. You don't yet know what colors your life will accumulate around it. Let the rug stay quiet.
- 04Material: wool if budget allows, cotton flatweave if not. Skip synthetic — they look fine on day one and tired by month six.
- 05Don't buy until you've sat in the empty room a week. The rug is what makes the room start. Worth the wait.
